The Love Songs of Sappho (Literary Classics)
Published in Paperback by Prometheus Books (January, 1999)
Authors: Sappho, Paul Roche, and Page DuBois
Average review score:

Beautiful and well-researched.
The fragments themselves are quite beautiful, but I found the commentary much more interesting. Since so little is known about the subject, the translator provides notes along with each fragment that lets the reader know from where the fragment came. The commentary also includes citations from many writers of Greek lyric poetry. The result is not a work that gives one man's perspective of Sappho but a work that says: "here -- this is what scholars today say about Sappho and her native Greece." The book also includes an interesting essay by the translator, cute sketches, and a glossary of people and places.

Greatest lyric poet of Greece
Sappho was the greatest lyric poet of Greece, and any modern reader of her poetry can easily see why. Although she admittedly suffers in translation, one must learn to ignore the frustration caused by the occasional awkward translation. One must also try to ignore the fragmentary nature of her poems. There was once a definitive edition which consisted of nine books, but it was burned in hte Middle Ages because of the lesbian love poems. The poems we have now are just papyrus fragments or quotations. However, even in English, even with only a few extant pieces, Sappho's poetry is vibrant and beautiful.

Lovers & Liars
Published in Audio Cassette by Media Books (September, 1998)
Authors: Sally Beauman and Michael Page
Average review score:

Brilliant as usual from Ms. Beauman
For those of us who are intelligent enough to follow plot twists and a good story line, this book is excellent. Not really a romance, more of a thriller. Her publishers keep packaging and promoting Sally Beauman as a romance novelist, and she's so much more. Try her novel "Dark Angel" so good in my opinion, as to almost be considered literature.

A great book
A very good book, something that is hard to find these days.

MacBeth: A Facing Page Edition--The Original Text and a Translation into Modern English
Published in Paperback by Shakespeare for Today Trust (December, 1990)
Authors: William Shakespeare and Eric Zuesse
Average review score:

Shakespeare really is written in English!
Zuesse's translation is understandable, while still retaining Shakespeare's original message. While reading MacBeth, I could comprehend the literature and imagine what was happening in the play better than the other works by Shakespeare I have read. Eric Zuesse has mastered the ART of translation.

A translation of MACBETH that Shakespeare would approve!
Eric Zuesse is doing for Shakespeare today what the Bard would be doing for himself today: making his plays accessible to everyone.

Shakespeare's appeal 400 years ago was due not only to his profound insight into the workings of the human heart and to his ability to express the range of universal human emotion from agony to joy in unforgettable words BUT ALSO TO HIS USE OF THE COMMON MAN'S LANGUAGE--the vernacular. However, some of today's Shakespeare is no long available to the average reader because some of his language has become archaic.

Is there a solution? Enter Eric Zuesse.

His translation of MACBETH avoids the pitfalls of today's would-be modernizers: bowdlerizing, simplifying, and paraphrasing.

In contrast, Eric Zuesse has remained so failthful to the meter, rhyme pattern, and content of every line of the original text that Shakespeare himself himself would have given his endorsement!

Marty Hall's Servlets and JavaServer Pages Training Course
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall PTR (04 June, 2001)
Author: Marty Hall
Average review score:

Great Course!!!
I owe Marty a lot for my livelihood.
I have used many JSP materials and I am sure I will be using a lot more in the future.
As an independent trainer and consultant, I teach experienced developers and consult on corporate projects. The consulting work come as a result of the training I give and through word-of-mouth refferals.
As we all know, the reputations of people like me does not last much longer than the previous course - which means that I have to keep improving my material and presentation else I am out of a job.
Marty's course is comprehensive and presented in a lively, easy to follow manner. He does not only show you how things are done, but more importantly why - it is like being there, with the added advantage that you can always replay the lecture. I have listened to the audio a few times and I sure am going to listen to it again.
Another thing: Marty is one of those few authors who have taken the time to answer my queries.
Well done Marty - it is a pity there are not many teachers like you out there!

fast track intro, hits salient points
I think this package is great. I would like to see more multimedia presentations such as this one. I would prefer everything to be electronic (presentations, tests, video, everything), and it would be nice if you could mark your place in the course electronically. There's a little too much video of Marty Hall waving his hands around (I'd rather be staring at code, hopefully with the parts he's talking about highlighted). However, overall I think this is an excellent introductory course because it not only familiarizes the reader with servlets and jsp, but also is chocked full of helpful hints, warnings of pitfalls, and guidance on good design practices.

By the way, the video won't work properly in either internet explorer or netscape. But if you open both browsers simultaneously, and play a few seconds of the video in one browser, and then stop the video in that browser, and then watch the full length of the video in the other browser, then the picture will look just fine.

Molecular Evolution: A Phylogenetic Approach
Published in Paperback by Blackwell Science Inc (October, 1998)
Authors: Roderic D. M. Page and Edward C. Holmes
Average review score:

Trees and more trees
Although molecular phylogenetic analysis can be extremely complex, this reference provides an introduction to the subject that is straightforward to read. The reference begins with consideration of trees, which are structures used to model actual evolutionary relationships between genes or entire lifeforms. It then provides an introduction to molecular and population genetics. Coding as well as noncoding DNA (tandem repeats, transposable elements, retroviruses, spacer DNA) is considered. The reference then considers how genetic change can be measured, followed by how we can deduce molecular phylogenies. The validity of the molecular clock is then considered, along with a discussion of the neutralist-selectionist debate. The reference finally considers how different phylogenies can be combined to determine actual phylogeny, reconciled trees, and rates of diversification.

Handy read
This book is very well written and a handy tool for anyone who is new to molecular evolution. Nice diagrams and concise chapters. The authors know how to break up the sometimes demanding ideas into appropriate bites. Perfect for grad students and senior undergrads.

New American Bible/Personal Size/White Page Edging/510 04
Published in Paperback by Catholic Book Pub Co (December, 1988)
Author: Catholic Book Publishing Co
Average review score:

One of the best bibles for both study and prayer . . .
. . . and I've tried a few! I have already purchased three copies of this version of the NAB, for school, chapel, and time at home from seminary. Its best features are its small size and the FOOTnotes. Nothing drives me more crazy than flipping around for endnotes on a point I'm interested in pursuing. The quality of the footnotes is very high as well. The text is small but very readable, sharply printed on bright white paper. This publication of God's Word remains the best I've seen in years.

Convenient carry size
This Bible's advantage is it's size. It's very compact, fits easy in a brief case or purse, yet easy to read. My son needed a Bible for his confirmation class and he wanted one like dad's. So, now we both have one. If you want to keep God's word with you at work and on the go, this is the Bible you want.

Well worth the price of admission!
I like the book, and the chapter titles. I think it is a good book for those that have no idea on how to get started in starting any type of business. It has good solid resources, and advice. I've spent fifteen bucks on a lot worse, and have gotten nothing but disappointment...but not here.

A great Business Basics Book
I enjoyed reading this wonderful heartfelt written book. I will use the advice given to start my own business, which is a computer consulting business. I think the advice that the book outlines is good to use for starting any business. Good resource, great advice. I am telling all my friends who are thinking about starting a business.
